Creating indicator variable where independant variable gives a value of one if it effects the dependant variable

How do i go about creating an indicator variable where it gives a value of 1 when it effects my independant variable? should i use the gen command? i have tried looking on the already posted forums about the process but it doesnt seem clear to me how to set it, so i get a coefficient on each one which is how the dependant is effected.
