URGENT: descriptive stats for continuous variable

I want to summarise a continuous variable by categories and then report the chi2 value for the existence of a difference in the continuous variable between the two categories.
for example I want to summarise the log earnings by urban/ rural and get the chi2 to test if a difference in earnings between the two groups is significant. can someone please help me
