Creating theoretical alternatives in Stata

Hey there,

since I am currently writing my bachelor thesis, it's the first time I really work with STATA. Normally, I do not have problems using the software, however I've some problems regarding the data structure. In addition, I do not really know what my problem is called so that I couldn't find any possible solutions online.

Basically, I want to analyse how tax rates affect investment decisions of multinational companies. I have a panel dataset for several years which includes data for affiliates of multinationals. However, I want to take account of the main sets of options of multinationals. Therefore, I want to consider all locations where the multinational theoretically could have invested rather than only those where it actually invested in the past.

Therefore, I would like to have for each year of each parent company observations for all countries in the dataset. If the firm didn't invest in that specific year in a specific country the level of investment variable should be 0. If it actually invested there, the variable should reflect the level of investment, which is already present in my dataset.

Has anybody an idea about how to create new observations for the theoretical alernatives for each year?

I am thankful for any help.

Eduard
